King of the Nerds – Welcome to Nerdvana
“King of the Nerds” is the new reality competition show on TBS pitting nerd against nerd.
Players will compete for $100,000 and title, “King of the Nerds”.
But let’s bring it back a bit, and bring it full circle to today’s modern nerd.
If you were a child of the 80′s like I was then who can forget the movie “Revenge of the Nerds“.
As described by IMDB, “At a big campus, a group of bullied outcasts and misfits resolve to fight back for their peace and self respect.”
Lewis Skolnick and Gilbert Lowell were the leaders of the nerds, and with their group of outcasts to include Dudley Dawson aka “Booger”, they took on the Alpha Beta jock fraternity. Sure enough they prevailed and being a nerd was cool.
Who knew that almost 30 years later this movie would become a staple of how powerful it is to be a nerd.
It seems that these days the true rock stars are the technology gurus.
The true celebrities are the innovators of technology like Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Bill Gates (Microsoft), Sergey Bin and Larry Page (Google), Sean Parker (Napster) and many other tech startups.
Well with this in mind the actors who played Lewis Skolnick and Booger have now created Nerdvana, and the show King of the Nerds.
King of the Nerds puts 11 of the nerdiest people together, and has them competing for the ultimate prize of $100,000, and the winner will sit atop the throne of games.
Some of these contestants include a young neuroscientist, a pro gamer, a popular gaming blogger who proclaims herself as the “Queen of the WoW Nerds”, a computer hacker, and a 24yr old who had her PHD by age 24, and now works for NASA as a planetary protection engineer.
I watched the first episode last night, and man were they all super nerdy. Instead of looking at them in a negative way though I was thinking that I sure wish I did better in school. These are the people, like the famous nerds listed above that shape our world and give us all much of the technology enjoyments we enjoy everyday.
The first elimination was a game of chess, pitting Hendrick, an MIT graduate against Jon who holds 2 bachelor degrees from Georgia Tech; one in math and one in physics. The game was played on a life sized playing board, and 2 role playing characters moved the pieces for the contestants.
In the end Hendrick lost, and was booted from Nerdvana.
With that said, I’ll be watching the whole season and hope the show does well.
Below is the full episode of show 1, and a couple of the players video biographies.
